The stars are incredible. They light up the night sky on clear nights but on cloudy nights you can’t see them at all. They are always there though! I loved learning about the stars and constellations in second grade and I still love looking at the sky and finding the constellations, especially the Big Dipper and Little Dipper. Today’s project is totally inspired by the magnificent sky!
You will need: a rectangular canvas | Americana Decor Maxx Gloss in Patent Leather Dazzling Metallics Paint in Shimmering Silver | craft knife battery operated LED string lights
Step 1: Paint your canvas with a generous coat of Maxx Gloss in Patent Leather. This is going to create a shiny, night sky background. Let this base coat dry to the touch.
Step 2: Using a thin paint brush, paint the outline of your constellation with the Dazzling Metallics Shimmering Silver. I went with the big dipper because it is my favorite constellation.
**Tip** It is best to first mark where the stars are and connect them with lines of paint.
Step 3: Use the craft knife to create holes where the main stars of the constellation are. You will want to create an X shape at each location. This is where the lights will go!
Step 4: Splatter the Dazzling Metallics Shimmering Silver all over the canvas to create the illusion of lots of stars. A good technique for doing this is to flick a paint-filled paint brush about 8 inches above the canvas. Allow for the canvas to dry completely.
Step 5: Once dry, flip the canvas over and push a light through each of the holes just far enough that the bulb pokes through.
I absolutely love how it came out! Now I have a DIY constellation canvas that ACTUALLY LIGHTS UP! It looks so cool lit up and hanging on the wall. Don’t you just love turning blank canvases into awesome room decor? I know I do.
