9/30 | Tips for Dealing with Homesickness

It is 100% normal to feel homesick your freshman year of college. Even after your freshman year, it can still be difficult to be away from home for such long periods of time. It happens to everyone; even if you were so excited to get away, you may find yourself wanting to go home after a few weeks. It can make you feel very alone and like you are the only one experiencing this feeling. The truth is that most of the people in your classes and that you see are feeling the same way and just pretend like they are feeling perfectly normal, probably how you at when you leave your dorm room. In today’s post, I am going to share a few tips fro dealing with homesickness that I have found helpful so far.

When you are feeling sad and full of unhappy emotions, it can be very reliving to let them out in the form of tears. Everyone is different. Some people will cry more than others. Me, I am a cryer. I have had a few good cries since I have arrived at college. If you are also a cryer, I highly recommend Puffs Plus Lotion. They are dermatologist tested to be gentle on sensitive skin and America’s #1 lotion tissues!  They will also come in handy when you get sick for the first time and your mom isn’t there to take care of you. That happened to me last week and I don’t think I could have gotten through it without a few boxes of Puffs Plus Lotion. They are now available at Sam’s Club in a 10 pack. As much as we want to pretend it’s not, Cold and flew season in coming, so stock up before it is too late!

Bring things that remind you of home with you. It could be books, little plants, or a month’s supply of your mom’s homemade granola. Any little thing that can serve as a reminder of home and help this new place feel like your new home at least for the time being.

One of the most helpful things that I have done is to stay busy. The less amount of time that I have to myself to think about how much I miss home the better. You can join clubs, get involved with the student government, look into Greek Life, or even do research with a professor after class. College really does have something for everyone with such a wide range of interests!

Another thing that I have found helpful is making a space for yourself on campus. I feel the most home sick when I am alone in my room. I recommend finding a place outside of your dorm room to do homework. It could be the library, the common room, a garden, a bench, a staircase. Find somewhere that you are comfortable.
