7/31 | DIY Running Band

I love to listen to music when I run but it is annoying to hold my phone the whole time.  Workout clothing for women rarely has pockets leaving us with not a whole lot of options. I decided to get out my sewing machine and sew up my own solution to this problem. Today I am going to share with you how to make your own DIY running band. Coats & Clark just came out with a new thread called Eloflex that is available at JoAnn’s now. It made this project so much easier because I was able to use a straight stitch with the stretch athletic fabric. Eloflex expands with the fabric so that seams and hems won’t break when the fabric is stretched.

Step One: Measure around your waist and cut one piece of fabric that is that measurement minus 10 inches long and 9 inches wide. Cut a second piece that is 8.5 inches by 8.5 inches.

Step Two: Place the shorter piece of fabric down face up on the table. Place the zipper teeth side down on top so that the raw edges line up at the top. Pin or clip them together then sew them together with a quarter inch seam allowance. Make sure to move the zipper pull when sewing that section.

Step Three: Fold the fabric in half so that the right sides are facing each other and the zipper lines up with the other raw edge. Take it to the sewing machine and sew it together using a quarter inch seam allowance.

Step Four: Unzip the zipper and sew a top stitch along both sides of the zipper. This creates a finished and professional look to the project.

Step Five: Open up the fold over elastic and place the fabric with the zipper between the fold. Make sure that the zipper is straight and towards the top end.  Then sew along the edge to close it. Repeat this step on the other side.

Step Six: Now take the long piece and fold it in half along the short side so that the right sides are together. Clip the raw edges together along the long side and sew them together with a half inch seam allowance using a straight stitch. Then flip the tube you just sewed right side out.

Step Seven: Attach one end of the piece with the fold over elastic on it to one end of the long tube of fabric with one straight stitch. Make sure the seam of the tube is on the inside so that it is not seen when you are wearing the running band.  Then attach the other two ends.
I love how the running band turned out. I used to be intimidated by stretch and athletic fabric but with the Eloflex thread, it is just like sewing cotton. Straight stitches are the best! If you are a runner, you should definitely make this DIY running band. If you are into making your own workout clothing, Eloflex will be your new best friend.
