You guys! I made a quilted project and I am so excited to share the tutorial for it with you. Quilting can sound intimidating, but learning how to make a quilted makeup bag is a great introduction. With Clover’s newest product, The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot, this quilted bag is super easy to sew up. I know you are going to want one because there are so many projects that you can make with it! Let’s get into the tutorial for this fun quilted makeup now though.
- Fabric for the top of the bag
- Fabric for the bottom of the bag
- Fabric for the lining of the bag
- Fusible Fleece + iron
- Clover Rotary Cutter- 45mm
- The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot from Clover
- Clover Wonder Clips
- 12-inch zipper
- Coordinating thread
- Sewing Machine
Step One: Cut two pieces of fabric 4.5″ tall by 12″ wide for the top of the bag. Cut two pieces 5.5″ tall by 12″ wide for the bottom. Cut two pieces 9″ by 12″ for the linning.
Step Two: Cut two pieces of fusible fleece 4.5″ tall by 12″ wide and two 5.5″ tall by 12″ wide.
Step Three: Following the instructions on the packaging, fuse the fusible fleece onto the fabric of coordinating sizes. I used my Clover Wedge Iron for this step!
Step Four: Switch out your regular presser foot with The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot.
Step Five: With the gauge set to 1/2 inch, sew vertically down the short side of the fabric. Line up the foot on the right with the previous stitch line. Repeat this process all the way across both bottom pieces.
Step Six: Place one of the top pieces right side up on the table and place one of the bottom pieces right side down on top of it. Align one of the top edges and clip them together.
Step Seven: Stitch down the side with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This will attach the top and bottom pieces so that they are one outer piece. Do this on the other top and bottom pieces as well.
Step Eight: Place the outer piece right side up on the table, place the zipper teeth side down on top of it and then the lining fabric right side down. Align all the top edges and clip them together.
Step Nine: Sew down that side as close to the zipper teeth as you can. Then repeat steps 8-9 with the other side.
Step Ten: Top stitch on both sides of the zipper. Then unzip the zipper about half way.
Step Ten: Open up the bag so that the outer pieces are right sides together and the lining pieces are right sides together. Sew all the way around the bag with a 1/2 inch seam allowance being sure to leave about a 3 inch gap in the bottom of the lining fabric. Tuck the zipper tail in so that you don’t sew over it..
Step Eleven: Box the corners by pinching each corner together and aligning each corresponding side and bottom seams. Use a ruler and water soluble marker to mark a line perpendicular to the side seam. It should measure 4 inches long.
Step Twelve: Flip the bag right side out through the opening in the lining and the zipper. Then clip the gap in the lining and sew it closed.
Step Thirteen: Sew a small piece of fabric over the end of the zipper for a finished and polished look.
I just adore this bag- it is perfect for storing all my makeup in. Since it is so cute, I can let it sit out on the sink, but it is also ready to go for any trips. I can’t believe how easy The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot from Clover made it to make a quilted makeup bag. I want to quilt all of the things now! I love the simple straight line quilted pattern on this one, but I think next time I am going to use the presser foot to make a fun diamond pattern. The options are endless!
