Moving Hacks You Probably Didn’t Know

I’m certainly not the most organized person in the world, but these helpful tips for moving have really helped me to arrange everything before the big day. I bet they can help you too!

1. Call the utility companies as soon as you know you’re moving.

This is SO important. You want to be sure that the companies know exactly when to stop billing you at your old address and when to begin service at the new one. This can help you avoid big interruptions in your service!

2. Put plastic wrap over drawers so you don’t have to empty out their contents,

This is SUCH a clever idea. Keep drawers intact (no packing and unpacking needed) and simply cover them well with plastic wrap to keep the contents secure while moving.

3. Stuff hanging clothes into garbage sacks while still on the hangers.

Another creative way to avoid a lot of packing and unpacking: simple stuff the clothing still on hangers into garbage bags and transport as is.

4. Get rid of your junk!

You can have a garage sale and sell the items you won’t need. The extra money will come in handy for your new home.

5. Make yourself a moving key.

Make matching colored labels on every box and piece of furniture you are having moved. It will save everyone so much time as no one will have to stop to ask “where does this go?” over and over again.

6. Put a rubber band around the doorknob

This will prevent it from latching every time you carry a box out the door.

7. If there are fragile items in the box, be sure to mark it FRAGILE.

This will save everyone a lot of time and stress during the move especially if you have vulnerable items that could easily break during the move.

8. Speaking of fragile, put cotton balls inside your makeup compacts and other small fragile items to keep them from breaking.

This is such a great way to protect small fragile items including eyeshadow and powder.

9. Cover the tops of bottles of liquids with plastic wrap.

Remove the lid, cover the top of the bottle with plastic wrap, and then put the lid back on. This is a great way to help prevent spills from your shampoo, conditioner, and other liquid products.

10. Pack an overnight bag and a box of kitchen and bathroom essentials.

This is a great idea for your first day or two in your new home. You won’t have to be in a mad rush to get things unpacked and it’s incredibly helpful if you’re using a moving service and they are late in delivering your items.

Think about including a change of outfit or two, toiletries, a kettle or coffeemaker, coffee/tea and whatever you like to add to it, a few glasses, mugs, plates, bowls, some silverware, a couple of pots and pans, and anything else you might need to make the first night or two bearable. You could also pack an air mattress, some bedding, and pillows (and an air pump!) separately to ensure that you have somewhere to sleep until your bed arrives (or you have the energy to assemble it). Don’t forget some dish soap and toilet paper!

You’ll want to have some cleaning supplies handy too! You never know what condition your new home will be in when you arrive and it can really bring some comfort to sleeping in a new place if you can give it a good home cleaning first!

These moving hacks can make your next move so much smoother and easier! Take the stress out of moving day – well, at least some of the stress, with these great tips.
