It’s that time of year! There are tons of fresh fruits and vegetables available right now so it’s the perfect time to start canning. Pick your favorites and preserve them in these homemade jam recipes so you can enjoy them all year long.

Many people think canning is difficult. It’s true that you need to follow the steps carefully to ensure that your finished products are safe to eat but it’s really not hard. There are even some really easy refrigerator and freezer jams that make it all the easier. Invest in a few canning jars (you can reuse them!) and you’ll be all set to create your favorite jams and jellies.

When it comes to supplies, canning kits are often available in department stores and hardware stores. These give you sort of an all in one solution for getting started. Really though, you don’t need a lot of special equipment. You can often pick up canning jars at yard sales and thrift shops. All you would need to do is buy new lids and rings for them.

You’ll need a large stock pot for a water bath and you want to think about some way to safely lift those hot jars out of the water. They make special tongs just for jars, but we’ve also had luck with a combination of regular tongs and pot holders in a pinch. Whatever you use, just be super careful. The jars are super hot and slippery – you don’t want to drop them!
