Who loves learning new things? I know I do, especially when it comes to sewing! Today I get to teach you something new- how to sew a pillow cover with piping! To be honest I only learned how to do this myself a few months ago. In true Courtney fashion though, I have made lots of them since then. I just love the added pop of color you can get with a contrasting piping.
These pillow covers that I am sharing today are super cute and match my new craft studio. I really need to get around to showing that to you all. Soon I promise! Let’s get to making the piping and sewing the pillows now, shall we?
You will need:
- Pillow insert
- Fabric- 1 piece cut to the same dimensions of your pillow & 2 pieces cut to the same length of the pillow and 1/2 the width plus 2 inches
- Coats Dual Duty XP All Purpose Thread
- Double fold bias tape
- Cording
- Scissors
- Sewing clips
- Sewing machine

Step One: Open the double fold bias tape and place the cording inside of it on top of the fold. Then fold it closed again. You will want to have a few inches of bias tape hanging over the end of the rope.
Step Two: Head to the sewing machine and sew down the side of the cording as close as you can. I would recommend using a zipper foot for this if you have one.
Step Three: Place the square piece of fabric face up on your work surface. Then match the raw edges of the bias tape and the fabric up with each other along all four sides and clip them together. When you get to the corners, you will need to snip the bias tape so that the piping will bend and go around the corner.
Step Four: When you reach the spot where you started, cut the end of the piping. Place the end inside of the bias tape from the other side. Fold the end of the bias tape over so that there is a crisp and clean edge.
Step Five: Head to the sewing machine and stitch along all four sides getting as close to the cording as possible again.
Step Six: We are moving onto the back side. Take both of the rectangular pieces of fabric and fold over a half inch along one long edge. Then clip them in place and sew down the edge so that it has a nice finished look.
Step Seven: Place the two back pieces right side down on top of the front piece. Line up all the raw edges and let the finished edges overlap in the middle. It doesn’t matter which one is on top or bottom. Use the sewing clips to keep them in place.
Step Eight: Head to the sewing machine and sew around all four sides for the last time again getting as close to the cording as possible.
Step Nine: Create little slits around the rounded corners so that they will lay flat.
Step Ten: Flip the pillow cover right side out.
Step Eleven: Put the pillow on the pillow insert.
Phew! You made it to the end and you now know how to make some homemade pillows with piping. I promise that it isn’t as intimidating as this long post probably made it seem. I just wanted to be very thorough in my directions and give you lots of pictures so that you can actually follow along.
