Maybe the first thing you learned was how to sew a potholder but I have been sewing for a few years and it wasn’t until recently that I attempted it. Maybe because I didn’t want to make a frumpy old grandma pot holder. But the other day when I was using my frumpy old store-bought pot holder I thought to myself, “I want to sew a cool pot holder.” And so this is what I came up with. Not only will the post show you how to sew a pot holder but it will show you how to sew a cool denim & chevron potholder.
- Denim fabric (another type would also work)
- Denim Thread
- Fusible Fleece
- Rotary Cutter + Clear Ruler + Cutting Mat
- Sewing Clips
- Heat Activated Disappearing Pen
- Iron
- Sewing Machine
Step One: Cut two 9 inch squares of fabric and fusible fleece.
Step Two: Following the directions on the packaging, iron the fusible fleece onto the back of the two pieces of fabric.
Step Three: Place the two pieces of fabric (with the fusible fleece on the back) right sides together and clip them. Leave space for an open gap.
Step Four: Head to the sewing machine and sew around the square with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Step Five: Leave a gap in the stitching so that the project can be turned right side out.
Step Six: Clip the corners. This will reduce the bulk and allow for pointy corners.
Step Seven: Flip the project right side out and sew all the way around the ends with a 1/8 inch seam allowance. This will also properly close up the hole.
Step Eight: Use the Friction erasable pen to draw a design onto the potholder. I chose a chevron design for this one.
Step Nine: Stitch along the drawn line. Once finished use heat or wash the potholder to remove the pen marks.
I love how it turned out. I have a really bright white kitchen with lots of bright pops of color and so this denim is like a neutral in there. I think for someone with a darker more earth tone kitchen, this denim pot holder would be great as well and maybe even be their pop of color. So what do you think? This isn’t your typical grandma pot holder by any means!
