10/31 | Switch Up Your Switch Plates!

One day at Home Depot, I was browsing the light switch aisle to find some stainless steel switch plates for my kitchen. And let me tell you, I was amazed by the huge selections of colors, materials, and sizes. I was inspired by the huge array of switch plates, so I decided to make a few of my own!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Switch Plate or Outlet Cover
  • 3 Rolls of Washi Tape or Craft Tape
  • Sharpies (multiple colors)
  • 3 Colors of Acrylic Paint
  • Plastic Fork or Paint Brush
  • Black Ink
  • Rubber Stamp Set

Listed above are the materials for all three of the pictured switch plates. Here are some quick tutorials for each of the designs:

Sharpies and Stamps

Step 1: Using the Sharpies, draw out a few different patterns in different colors. I went with a chevron, dotted lines, and dots. Then I added the outline to the outlet space and the horizontal black stripes.

Step 2: Take the black ink pad and the stamps to print a word in the negative space. Since I saw four clear spaces for the letters, I chose the word “Love.”

That’s all there is to it! You can use any colors and designs that accent your space, so have fun with it!

Splatter Paint

Pour small amounts of all three colors onto a paper plate. Using either the plastic fork or paint brush, lightly splatter the paint onto the switch plate. I went out in my garage to do this and put down a trash bag to catch any drips.

That’s really it! The only thing I would say is to have fun with it! Splatter paint isn’t meant to be perfect or symmetrical, so have fun making a truly one-of-a-kind design!

Washi Tape

For the Washi Tape switch plate, the photo is pretty self-explanatory. Take the three different rolls and arrange them in a way that you like!

I hope you use this tutorial and switch up the switch plates in your home!
